How to Introduce Peanuts – Infant Allergies

Moving on from formula or breastmilk can be a scary transition for parents, but even scarier is the possibility of your baby having some type of allergy. So, when should you introduce peanuts, eggs, or the other top 8 allergens?

The AAP recommends introducing all allergens between 4-6 months. This is different than older info that used to say to wait until one year. This outdated info actually is proven to cause more allergies, so it’s important to stay up to date and realize that as research develops, things change!

The top 8 allergens are:

  1. Dairy
  2. Eggs
  3. Soy
  4. Wheat
  5. Peanuts
  6. Treenuts (like almonds)
  7. Fish
  8. Shellfish (like shrimp)

These should all be introduced early, and often. Introduction should follow these simple rules – introduce between 4-6m, at least 2-3 times a week, and continuously until 12m. This steps all help boost the immune system an prevent allergies!

It can be hard to introduce these things doing traditional weaning or using purée because of choking hazards. Peanuts and peanut butter, for example, are choking hazards on their own! There’s a few different options for introducing solids.

With traditional Weaning and purée you have to find a way to add the allergen to baby’s usual foods. Some easy methods that I love include shrimp mashed potatoes (minced shrimp mixed into the potato purée) or you can find powdered products that easily blend into your baby’s usual foods! My favorite option for introducing allergens is Lil’ Mixin’s brand!

How To Use Lil’ Mixins
